Have you ever wondered how effective I am affirmation statements can be?
So did I! And at first I thought they were a silly way to build confidence in yourself.
I remember vividly the first time I saw someone do an “I Am” affirmation when I was in high school.
I was watching a drama series called Mr. Robot, and a character named Angela had started a job at a morally corrupt company. A company that killed her mom but made Angela enough money to pay off her crippling student debt and live a luxurious life.
We see her sitting in her work clothes on her bed before leaving to go to work, repeating I am affirmations. It was symbolic of how she clung for some sense of control in a corrupt company she worked for and in a society that her company helped destroy.
I thought it was sad and ridiculous, and my little 16-year-old brain didn’t plan on ever trying it if it was indicative of having no morals, standards, or respect for myself.
Then years later, I read an article about our daily thoughts. Forbes put out an article on a study by Dr. Fred Luskin of Stanford University, who found that the average person has around 60,000 thoughts per day and most are repetitive.
And about 80% of those 60,000 thoughts per day are negative. This was not only alarming but made me question…
One (of the many) recommendations I found is to use affirming statements about myself, called affirmations. Now I no longer link affirmations to the stupidity of Angela in Mr. Robot who knew she was doing something awful and just wanted to make herself feel better. Through research, I’ve learned that “I am” affirmation statements can actually rewire your brain to be a more positive and confident person.
“I Am” affirmation statements are encouraging phrases you can say or think to reshape the way you see yourself. Their purpose is to remind ourselves throughout the day of all the positive things about us that we often forget.
They aren’t meant to give you a false narrative or mask deeper unresolved issues you need to work through. They are bringing to light things about yourself that you either admire or things you’re actively pursuing to become a part of your life.
For example, I don’t think I’m the most photogenic person. But I try to find something in the photo that I like, so I’ll reframe my perspective by saying or thinking:
“I am in love with my smile.”
“I love the way my legs look in this photo.”
For goals that you have, “I am” statements serve as positive reminders of what you’re working towards in addition to putting in the work. Want to make more money? Use I Am statements such as:
“I am a money magnet”
“I am constantly welcoming an abundance of money in my bank account.”
“ I am worthy of financial abundance”
The goal of I am statements is to reprogram or strengthen your daily thought process.
If we have thousands of negative thoughts daily, what could it hurt to replace some of those negative thoughts with positive-serving thoughts intentionally?
“I am” statements can help you change your thought process to become more confident and happier. They can also help you see your value, rather than constantly comparing yourself to others.
Recognize that you are worthy of all the love, respect, and opportunities in this world.
