Some people think routines can be boring and redundant as if we operate like robots on our redundant schedule. However, when I don’t use a routine, my life becomes full of stress and anxiety with no structure. No structure may be fine during a vacation, but it doesn’t work when you have goals and achievements you’d like to come to fruition. Habit formation and routines are what allow me to feel in control of my life and allow me to get my big tasks done daily so I can enjoy life more.

Here are some proven benefits of morning routines that I want to highlight before getting into the actual routine:

Rise and Shine: Morning routine for students

A productive morning routine comes first. Begin by waking up at a consistent time on weekdays AND weekends to regulate your body’s internal clock. This will help you sleep better at night and wake up with more energy to take on the day. The time you wake up is totally up to you. We aren’t forcing “you have to wake up at 5 AM to be successful” because it doesn’t apply to everyone. But I do encourage you to get the right amount of sleep so you aren’t cranky and unproductive the next day.

Then, I spend some of this time on the Bible App and in prayer. Next, take 5-10 minutes to journal about what you’re grateful for and what would make your day successful. This gets you in the mindset of accomplishing your biggest tasks for the day. I either use my morning minutes printable which is tailored for boosting productivity throughout the day or my 5-minute journal.

After your moments of mindfulness, getting some movement in is important. Morning stretches or a brief exercise can be all you need to release those endorphins (chemicals released during physical activity that improve your mood and focus throughout the day) and have an amazing morning. If you have an 8:30 AM or 9:30 AM lecture you gotta get to, you can either skip this step, wake up earlier to get a workout in, or pick another day to work out

Lastly, have some breakfast. Please avoid skipping breakfast, as this can lead to decreased concentration and productivity.

Ultimate tips for staying productive throughout the day

Maintaining productivity throughout the day requires effective time management and focus. Break down your tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and prioritize them based on importance and urgency. Use tools such as to-do lists, task management systems like ClickUp (a free app), Google Calendar, or a planner to stay organized and track your progress. 

Eliminate distractions by turning off notifications on your phone or using website blockers to limit time spent on social media. A game changer for me is removing my phone from the room or further than an arm’s length away while I’m working. Otherwise, I get nothing done!

It’s also important to take regular breaks to recharge. Studies have shown that regular breaks can improve focus and prevent burnout. Experiment with the Pomodoro Technique, which I have an entire article on this topic and the benefits of it, or find a rhythm that works best for you. During breaks, engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, such as going for a short walk, listening to music, or podcasts, or practicing deep breathing exercises.

Balancing work and personal life in the afternoon

As the day progresses, it’s time to strike a balance between your academic commitments and personal life. Schedule dedicated time for studying and completing assignments. But also allocate time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This could include spending time with friends, starting new hobbies, or exercising alone or with friends. For a semester, I found awesome girls who love to run, and we’d pick times to go for a jog together!

Avoid overloading your schedule and learn to say no when necessary. It’s important to prioritize your well-being and make sure that you have time for self-care. Set boundaries and communicate your needs with your friends. Remember, a balanced life leads to greater overall satisfaction and better academic performance, which is most student’s goal.

Experiment with different study techniques to find what works best for you. This could include:

  • Active learning methods such as summarizing things you’ve learned in your own words

Repetition is also key, so make sure you’re exposing yourself to key concepts and events or terms you need to remember. 

Create an inviting study environment that reduces distractions and promotes focus. Find a quiet space, organize your study materials, and make sure you have everything you need before you begin. Establish a study routine that aligns with your natural energy levels.

What does this mean? Some students find they concentrate best in the morning, while others are more productive in the evening. Find your optimal study time and stick to it consistently.

As the evening sets in, it’s so very important to create a routine that promotes relaxation and prepares you for a good night’s sleep. Engage in activities that help you relax and destress, such as reading, listening to calming music, or practicing relaxation exercises. Just as I start the day, I end it with meditation and journaling to reflect on the day and practice gratitude. 

Create a sleep-friendly environment by ensuring your bedroom is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. I’ve been listening to a bunch of Andrew Huberman and The Skinny Confidential, so I’ve learned about how important it is to keep your space dark for at least an hour before going to bed. Darkness helps stimulate the production of melatonin, which is a hormone that helps you fall asleep faster.

Establish a consistent bedtime routine that signals to your body it’s time to sleep. Avoid scrolling through your social media for hours, as this will definitely disrupt your mood and quality of sleep.

Nighttime routine for better sleep

Before going to bed, take a few moments to plan and prepare for the next day. This is something I NEVER skip. Reviewing your to-do list and prioritizing your tasks makes your next day that much more smoother. This helps you stress less about the upcoming day and allows you to start the next morning with a clear plan. Set out your clothes, pack your bag, and gather any materials you’ll need for the day. This is such a game-changer if you’re not already doing this.

Finally, make sure you get enough sleep to recharge and allow your body and mind to recover. Your goal should be 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. If I don’t get enough sleep, I’m a monster. Naps creep into my daily schedule and I can’t fully concentrate on class or work. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, and avoiding caffeine and phone time close to bedtime can all contribute to better sleep quality.
